World Clean Up and Big Beach Clean Weekend

24.09.2019.

The Guernsey Recycling Group [GRG] and Galaxy CI recently supported the World Clean Up effort and the Big Beach Clean Weekend in Guernsey, which saw volunteers from La Societe Guernesiaise, Pick it Up Guernsey, Plastic Free Guernsey and the Alderney Wildlife Trust lead a variety of clean up events along the beaches, coastlines and green spaces in the Bailiwick.

Fairtrade Guernsey recreated their logo at the Vazon Beach Clean on Saturday 21st September, as they celebrated the 25th Anniversary of the Fairtrade mark. This was kindly filmed by the Drone Ranger.

C5 Alliance also came to the Bordeaux Beach Clean on Sunday the 22nd September to test their Coastal Clean Up app, which is being developed by C5 Bursary Students to log the type, size and location of litter found on coastlines around the island. The app is able to generate reports, charts, and heat maps of the distribution and nature of litter affecting the local marine environment; helping organisations such as La Societe Guernesiaise to tackle the issues associated with micro plastics. The data collected on island is submitted to the Marine Conservation Society to contribute to the national, and international, understanding of microplastics.

GRG will now recycle the majority of the 60 kg of rubbish collected from the local beaches and parks; which mostly consists of paper, cardboard, metals, plastics and glass. Any items that cannot be recycled will be recovered.
